The PAK 38 50mm Anti-tank Gun is the main AT weapon for the Axis' Wehrmacht. It is made up of the loader, spotter and gunner. It can fire explosive armor piercing rounds which will destroy any light vehicles very quickly and any armor in a few shots. It has a "Camouflage" ability where it cannot be seen by enemy units, but its movement speed is lowered. It also has a "Hold Fire" function, which, put together with the Camo, it can decimate any armour. This is because the initial shot when in camo with "Hold Fire" on the first shell's Penetration is ten times normal with a 25% damage bonus and 50% accuracy bonus.

Description

Light and modestly mobile, the PAK38 50mm Anti Tank Gun has a solid rate of fire and a high muzzle velocity that can significantly penetrate Allied armor. Smaller than the Allied 57mm M1, the PAK38 50mm Anti Tank Gun stands only 1.1 meters high and, when camouflaged, can surprise enemy units and armor with devastating results.

Weapons

The PAK 38 50mm Anti-tank Gun is a relatively powerful anti-tank gun on a wheeled carriage. With a long range and a strong punch, it is a good and cheap defensive weapon against enemy tanks. Unfortunately this weapon provides little actual defense, requiring the cannon to be protected by other units when enemies are near.

50mm Panzerabwehrkanone 38 L/60

The 50mm AT Gun is a respectable anti-tank weapon, especially considering its cheap cost. It poses a serious threat to all enemy vehicles. The 50mm AT Gun fires powerful and rather accurate shells. It has a basic 90% chance to hit vehicle targets up to 40 meters away - the normal vehicle engagement range. Accuracy drops rapidly beyond this range, down to 65% at a range of 60 meters. Of course at this range, most units can't return fire anyway - the Pak 38 50mm AT Gun is one of the longest-ranged direct-fire weapons in the game. Accuracy against infantry units, however, is almost negligible at any distance.

Each shell that strikes the target delivers 150 points of damage - an average amount for an anti-tank weapon, but still remarkable compared to normal tank guns. Front-armor Penetration leaves something to be desired, with a basic 75% chance of getting through a M4 Sherman's front, though failure to penetrate will still cause 50% of the total damage potential (75 points). The 50mm AT Gun can nonetheless reliably pierce any rear armor except that of a M26 Pershing. In an emergency, the gun can be camouflaged so it will be hidden and do extra damage and if the hold fire ability is activated the penetration will be increased ten times and the damage will be increased by 25% and a 50% bonus accuracy.

Additionally, the crew of the 50mm AT Gun are quite adept at reloading this cannon. As a result, it will only take a 3.5 second interval between each shot - one of the fastest reloading Anti-Tank cannons in the game. This increases its damage output considerably.

The main drawback of this weapon is that it can only fire within a limited angle - 40° to the left or right of its carriage's current heading - and takes at least 2 seconds to rotate to a new heading. This means it must be correctly positioned to take advantage of a kill zone, and can be flanked easily if not protected from all sides by obstacles or other friendly units. Enemy light vehicles can also quickly drive through and past the firing zone, ending up behind the gun and easily able to destroy it - assuming the gun did not manage to destroy them as they moved through the kill zone.

With its maximum range of 60 meters, this cannon can safely fire from behind your lines, and can utilize a spotter to snipe at enemy units inside their own territory - though with somewhat reduced accuracy.

Pistole Parabellum 1908

The Pistole Parabellum 1908 is a semi-automatic pistol. It is a standard-issue self-defence weapon for German Officers. It does 5 damage per hit and the accuracy and the firing rate is just normal.

Veterancy

Although the Pak 38/50 mm Anti-tank Gun can be considered as a weapon team, it gains veterancy through vehicle veterancy upgrades, available at the Kampfkraft Center. Each unit, which is already on the battlefield, or will be built, receive proper upgrades. Note however, that this unit has feature of weapon team, and if whole crew has been lost, cannon can be remanned again, and retrieve lost veterancy. These bonuses are cumulative to each other:

Pak3850mmNoVeterancy
No Veterancy:
  • Unit is at normal combat efficiency.
Pak3850mmVeterancy1
Level 1 Veterancy:
  • Received damage decreased by 15%.
Pak3850mmVeterancy2
Level 2 Veterancy:
  • Maximum health increased by 15%.
Pak3850mmVeterancy3
Level 3 Veterancy:
  • Damage increased by 15.5%.

Tips

  • PAK's gain an ambush bonus when firing from stealth.
  • PAK's have extremely long range. Keep them in the back of your forces, and they'll shoot farther then they are normally able to see.
  • As the opponent, you can spot a cloaked PaK by clicking an infantry unit and hover your mouse cursor where you suspect it is. If it is there, the cursor will show green cover where there should be none.

Strengths

It is a very powerful mobile artillery anti-tank piece. It can be moved anywhere on the battlefield unlike the 88mm AT gun. If grouped together with infantry, like the Grenadiers and MG42 team, protecting its flanks, and possible slightly back in the defensive line, it can greatly increase the power and dominance in that area, especially against any vehicles. Using Volkgrenadiers as a replacement team to man the gun if the enemy take it out is also strongly advised!

Weaknesses

As it is a mobile artillery piece, it has a slower movement speed than most units. It needs to be redeployed each time it is moved to be ready for firing. It is very vulnerable to sniper and enfilading fire-as it is helpless while deploying and packing up; therefore escorts of infantry units is advisable while moving the gun! As well as to man it if the original crew is killed off.
