The Commando Glider is a base structure fielded only by the British in Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts.

Overview

Unlike the real thing, which are limited to carry a certain number of infantry, equipment or vehicles, these gliders are capable of producing more units even if the units that it dropped are already deployed. Available only if the Royal Commandos Support is chosen, gliders are capable of landing and deploying infantry like the Commandos and light tanks such as the Tetrarch Tank on anywhere on the battlefield. Like most base structures, these gliders are capable of reinforcing any other infantry squads to full strength. These gliders can put an enemy off-guard with a full complement of vehicles and commandos on the field disrupting the supply lines and delaying their advances. They are perfect for ambushing other units and harassing vital installations.

Glider Types

Commando Glider

Glider

A Commando Glider. Note the wings are broken due to the landing.

Known as the Airspeed Horsa Mk I glider. This glider is a high-wing cantilever monoplane with wooden wings and a wooden semi-monocoque fuselage. The wooden wings are designed to break up if the glider is in contact with hardened object, decreasing the impact and producing a smoother and safer landing. It can be called in to be deployed anywhere on the battlefield. This structure is the glider that trained and deployed the elite special forces of the British - the Commandos.

Tetrarch Glider

Tetrarch Glider

The Tetrarch Glider.

Known as the General Aircraft 49 Hamilcar glider. Similar to the Airspeed Horsa glider, the Hamilcar glider was also built on a wooden fusalage with two wooden wings, which break apart from the main body to absorb the impact and decrease the risk of a crash landing. This tank-cargo carrying glider is the only type of glider design to carrying seven tons of cargo. A Tetrarch Tank is deployed once the glider is sucessfully landed on the battlefield. It is also capable of producing more Tetrarch Tanks.

HQ Glider

Glider HQ

The HQ glider. Note the makeshift tent set up with ammunition right inside it.

It is a Horsa Glider with a tent and radio set up as a secondary headquarters on the field. The HQ Glider is the special glider that deploys some of the specialized Commandos support weapon such as the MG Commandos, Mortar Commandos and the PIAT Commandos.

Weakness

These gliders are fielded to deploy light units from the air, and their materials are also light, being made out of wood. Therefore, they are lightly armored and are very fragile. Mortar fire, artillery strikes and tank fire will most likely destroy a glider with a few shots; even infantry enfilade will put it down in a matter of minutes.
